Each issue of Lapham’s Quarterly adopts and explores a single theme. Our first four issues were dedicated, respectively, to War, Money, Nature, and Education, each created with an aim to help readers find historical threads from Homer to Queen Elizabeth I to George Patton, from Aesop to Edith Wharton to Joan Didion. New essays from writers such as Stanley Fish, Fritz Stern, and Andrew Delbanco then knotted each theme together. A typical issue features an introductory Preamble from Editor Lewis H. Lapham; approximately 100 “Voices in Time” — that is, appropriately themed selections drawn from the annals and archives of the past — and newly commissioned commentary and criticism from today’s preeminent scholars and writers. Submissions Policy

Lapham’s Quarterly does not accept unsolicited original work, but we invite readers to send along interesting, topical, unusual, or enlightening historical documents and articles for use in the Quarterly or online. You may send texts from authors on the order of Anaïs Nin, Herodotus, or Theodore Roosevelt; alternatively, you also can send lost drafts of the U.S. Constitution, stray Confederate specie, or still-pending Barbary ransom demands to:

Internship Opportunities

EDITORIAL INTERNSHIP
Lapham’s Quarterly offers internships in its New York office. The internship requires a full-time commitment, five days a week. Each internship lasts between three and five months, affording interns the opportunity to participate in a full production schedule. Interns participate in every step of the production process, from suggesting, finding, and editing historical texts, writing for the website, fact-checking, proofreading, and permissions. Interns attend every editorial and board meeting and are essential and beloved members of the staff. Please note that his internship is unpaid.

WEB INTERNSHIP
The web intern should be a creative aggregator and internet obsessive, familiar with history feeds and book blogs, as well as the voice of LQ’s social media. The intern is responsible for writing the Déjà Vu blog, and can also pitch posts for the Roundtable blog. The intern will work closely with the online editor to upload the issue to the website, research images, create newsletters, maintain social media, pitch content to bloggers and websites. Web interns also participate in the editorial process, submitting texts for the magazine. Experience with Movable Type, Tumblr, Twitter, and Photoshop is preferred. Please note this is a full-time, unpaid internship and it is located in our New York office.
